You might be asking yourself, "How do I keep my bike running smoothly if I buy a bike online, but have never assembled or maintained a bike before, AND my local bike shop does not sell bikes like this one?" Don't worry! As a past bike share and bike store employee, I am here to tell you that there are several service options to support you as you make the leap to electric bikes.
One of the great features of the modern bike industry are solutions that come to your doorstep. Many bike companies, like us, partner with velofix Mobile Bike Shops to offer assembly and maintenance services at a discounted price. Many of our U.S. customers are within range of a velofix franchise, so scheduling service is as easy as heading to their website and booking a time for them to show up in their mobile bike shop vans. You may never have to deal with the cumbersome process of loading and unloading your bike in a car again!
If you're looking for a local bike shop in your area that can help you with an ebike, the best way to start would be an online search for bike shops in the city you live in (bonus points if they carry fat tire/cargo bikes or ebikes). Even if they don't carry ebikes, absolutely still reach out. A performance road bike store I worked at routinely performed ebike assembly, as do the vast majority of bikes shops across the US.
Bike shops across the country have the ability to service electric bikes, even if they don't carry them. Despite what you might think, electric bikes and traditional bikes share the majority of their components. Most of the time you'll need to get an ebike serviced, it will be for something like replacing brake pads, getting your derailleur adjusted, or fixing a flat, all things that a traditional bike shop can handle! In terms of assembly, nothing will need to be done with any of the electronic components, so it will parallel the assembly of a traditional bike.
Although all Rad Power Bikes models have electrical components, our bikes are DIY in their design. They were born in the garages of our founders and are meant to be worked on and tinkered with. Nothing about the components or hardware requires special tools. Our bikes are made by cyclists for cyclists.
The assembly steps to put together one of our ebikes out of the box are almost identical to the assembly on a standard road bike with disc brakes. Watch our assembly videos to see the process before purchasing. There's no need to stress about crossing confusing wires because everything is already connected the way it should be. All you have to do is plug in the headlight! Aside from easy assembly, all of our bikes use Shimano drivetrains that can be easily serviced by your local bike shop. While some bike companies use proprietary hardware, our hardware is standard to industry tools and expectations. If you ever need replacement screws or bolts in the case that hardware becomes damaged, your local bike shop should carry a replacement.
If you run into an issue with your bike that you can’t figure out in the neighborhood, our technical support team is always around for backup! We can walk you through diagnosing your problems to work out a solution as quickly as possible over the phone or via email. Replacement parts are right around the corner!
This multitude of service options is giving the whole world the confidence to hop on an ebike. With perceptions rapidly changing and misconceptions being disrupted, there's never been a better time to receive help and support throughout the course of your ebike ownership.
